CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS
The Centre for Jazz Studies UK, based at Leeds College of Music, invites
contributions for a Special Issue of the interdisciplinary journal The
Source: Challenging Jazz Criticism.
The theme of the Special Issue is Jazz, Politics and the Popular, a title
designed to stimulate debate and new perspectives on jazz and its
relationship to popular culture. The issue will include an article 'Is
Jazz Popular Music?' by Professor Simon Frith. We welcome submissions that
address any aspect of this theme, which might include:
Jazz and popular culture
Jazz at the margins: the politics of popularity and the avant-garde
Globalisation and the marketplace
Jazz and dance: club cultures, subcultures
The canonisation of jazz
Smooth jazz
Accessibility vs. dumbing down in contemporary jazz performance
Political discourses in jazz
Jazz as a cultural signifier
Jazz in Film
Crooners
Valuing jazz
Jazz and the media
The commercial potential of jazz
The politics of fusion
Jazz and advertising
Submissions (10000 words maximum) will be blind peer reviewed by the
members of the editorial board. The issue is scheduled for publication in
early 2007.
Deadline for receipt of submissions is 30th September 2006.
