SUPPORTING FAMILY LITERACY
19 September 2006, London
Support for families is a strong feature of current government policy, particularly as a means to address social exclusion.
The Campaign for Learning report Give Your Child a Better Chance shows that parental support is eight times more important in determining a child's educational success than social class, but that low education, low social class and low income are often associated with low parental interest. Encouragement and support for involvement are necessary.
Recent years have seen a big expansion of family literacy, language and numeracy programmes. The Skills for Life national strategy and SureStart have opened up opportunities for schemes of this sort. More and more library authorities are becoming involved with family literacy initiatives, many linked with SureStart, others involving the families of primary school children.
Research has shown that family literacy programmes are effective in improving the literacy skills of both children and parents but that there is a lack of clarity about the purposes of family literacy approaches. Library staff are often unclear about the role of libraries in this area, and scope for sharing best practice has been limited.
BENEFITS OF ATTENDING
This course provides an opportunity to learn more about family literacy, about the reading development of pre-school and primary-age children, and about ways to promote literacy skills and positive attitudes to books and reading to families.
BY THE END OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL:
· acquired an insight into how children attain literacy skills
· discussed the role of libraries in supporting family literacy
· explored ideas for effective partnership work
· formulated strategies for supporting literacy and promoting reading enjoyment
· identified appropriate content for family literacy sessions
· gained confidence when helping parents, carers and children
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Managers of children's library services, children's librarians, other interested public library staff, SureStart workers, family learning officers.
