assessing the quality of information

Anyone and everyone can publish on the Web. Not all, though, are qualified
or knowledgeable in their chosen subject and some even publish deliberately
misleading information. Separating fact from fiction, and scrutinising the
credentials of an author on the Net are now an essential part of any
research. This course provides a step by step guide to assessing and
evaluating the quality of information. All types of media, including print,
will be covered but the emphasis will be on electronic resources. The
techniques are applicable to all sectors and types of organisations and all
levels of expertise.

speaker:
Karen Blakeman
date: 1 march
course fee: £295.00 + VAT (£346.63) includes buffet lunch and refreshments.

surveying and auditing records

Developing and implementing a robust records management programme begins
with knowing what records and information the organisation is creating,
receiving, using and keeping. Unless the records manager has a clear
understanding of what has to be managed there is a real risk of creating a
programme that is irrelevant to the organisation and impossible to
implement. Setting up a new records management programme or reviewing an
existing one should begin with a survey and audit of the records and
information in all the operational units of the organisation. This one day
course will take participants through the survey and audit process beginning
with designing the data collection questionnaire, deciding on the data
collection method, conducting interviews, analysing the data, developing
retention schedules and compiling a report on the survey and audit findings.
There will be practical exercises to enable participants to develop the
necessary skills.

Speakers: Margaret Crockett and Janet Foster
course fee: £295 .00 + VAT (£346.63) includes buffet lunch and refreshments

knowledge management: foundation programme

This one day course provides an introduction to the concepts and practice of
knowledge management.  Knowledge management has matured as a management
discipline now that it has been proven to deliver value to organisations.
This course will demystify the field and provide the basic grounding
delegates need to work in the area.  They will be introduced to the language
of knowledge management, the principles that underpin it and its practical
application across all sectors of the economy.

speaker: Adrian Dale
course fee: £325.00+ VAT (£381.88) includes buffet lunch and refreshments.

time management - working smarter not harder

This course on time management is a one day workshop which will concentrate
on developing skills to work smarter not harder and learn to work well under
pressure. The course will consider the key elements of effective time
management, identify our individual time 'bandits' and explore practical
ways to identify priorities, avoid procrastination, deal with interruptions
and crises and delegate tasks to others. It will also be an opportunity to
exchange ideas and experiences with others and to develop an initial action
plan to take back to the workplace.

speaker:
Beryl Morris and Keith Bonson
Date 6 March

breakthrough thinking in knowledge and information strategy

This advanced one day course is designed for information and knowledge
managers who want to make an impact at the highest levels in their
organisation. The course will provide delegates with an advanced information
and knowledge strategy toolbox that will enable them to design and plan
radical effective programmes. These tools are transferable outside the
information and knowledge domain and will allow delegates to participate in
the wider strategic debate in their organisations.

Speaker: Adrian Dale
Date: 7 March

return of the Librarian - CIP and KYC make research mission critical

As governments attempt to combat money laundering, complying with the new,
stricter regulatory environment has become mission critical for banks and
other financial institutions. This is especially true in the areas of
customer identification and know-your-customer regulation. A new set of
librarians and researchers has emerged: those responsible for customer due
diligence, background checks and overall regulatory compliance. This
workshop will discuss the current regulatory environment in the United
States and Europe and how this presents opportunities for librarians,
researchers and knowledge managers.

speaker:
Heather Hooper
date: 8 Mar AM
course fee: £145.00 + VAT (£170.38) includes buffet lunch and refreshments.

email - are you managing it or is it managing you?

This half day workshop is designed to facilitate delegates in sharing
individual and organisational approaches and lessons learnt in the 'use and
abuse' of email. The workshop will consider the drivers of email and the
fact that, for many, it has totally replaced face to face contact - "should
we be concerned?"
The workshop will also look at email as one of the channels of communication
and pose questions such as "organisations spend tens of thousands of pounds
trying to get staff to use an Intranet, and yet use of email requires no
incentive at all! Why?" In answering such questions delegates will consider
practical actions they can take away to support the effective and efficient
use of email in their respective organisations.
The workshop centres on the people and process aspects associated with
email, and not on any one particular email system/technology.

Speaker: ian Wooler

creativity, innovation and thinking outside the box

'An idea is a dangerous thing, especially if it's the only one you have.'
Albert Einstein.
The aim of this course is to improve attendee's ability to 'Think Outside
the Box', to give them an improved ability to Create new ideas about almost
any situation or problem, and to be more Innovative. It can help them do
existing things better, and to do better things.
It will show how easily anyone can create many new ideas, in fact the
problem will soon become that you have too many great ideas! The course will
also cover the important aspect of choosing the optimum solution. It will
also show how to create multiple solutions for seemingly 'impossible'
problems.
This is a very proactive class, with breakout sessions, and several hands-on
exercises to reinforce the material. It is thought provoking, fun, and for
many, will forever change their approach to problems and situations.

change management for EDRM implementations

Moving to EDRM is a huge change for an organisation and for individual
users.
Getting the system set up and on people's desktops is one thing, but the
compliance and information sharing benefits of EDRM will only be realised if
people actually use the system to save their records and to seek out the
information they need.

Change management is about:
* helping people to understand, influence and shape changes that affect them

* helping people develop the skills and capabilities they need to prosper in
the new situation
* building commitment and energy for the change

speaker:
James Lappin, Advisor, TFPL
Date: 10 march

understanding company accounts

Companies are ultimately judged on their financial performance. The major
method companies use to communicate financial information is through their
published accounts. A basic understanding of published accounts is thus
essential to many non-specialists and it is this that the course aims to
provide.
Starting with simple examples of financial reporting, the main financial
statements are introduced. Their purpose is explained and some of the fog of
accounting jargon cleared away. Having gained an understanding of what the
financial statements mean, delegates practice using a basic toolkit for the
interpretation of financial data. The basic rules and standards governing
the preparation of published financial information are also covered.

speaker:
Tudor Spencer,
Date: 13-14 march
course fee: £650.00 + VAT (£763.75) includes buffet lunch and refreshments.

compelling communications: radical communications techniques for information
professionals

In this fast moving world of information overload, grabbing and holding your
audience's attention is critical to getting your message across. For the
information professional, this is particularly important. You know what it's
like; you have critical messages to be heard but as the world becomes more
information focused, it has been difficult for your professional message to
shine out from amidst the rest. This one day workshop will introduce you to
leading edge communications techniques which will help you achieve real
impact as you speak and write - ensuring that your message is the one that
stands out.

planning and building a taxonomy

If a taxonomy is to be effective as a tool for navigating information
resources, it must be integrated with the other desktop tools and
interfaces, and it must reflect user needs. This two day workshop looks at
the whole environment in which the taxonomy operates, including the
browse/search interface for end-users, and the procedures for indexing
resources or categorising them automatically. The course covers key issues
of structure, presentation and ways of satisfying diverse user needs, and
looks behind the scenes at how technological "solutions" work. The exercises
on day two will provide practical experience of assembling terms and
concepts into a user-friendly shape. Participants may bring up their own
challenges for group discussion.

professional support lawyers and knowledge management - Session One

As the role of the Professional Support Lawyer becomes more complex there is
a need for greater understanding of the knowledge techniques and
technologies that are available. This course is designed to help
Professional Support Lawyers identify how they can develop their role and
better support the business objectives of their firm through knowledge.

This course is designed to take place over two half days. Although the two
sessions are designed as a complete programme each half day is
self-contained. The sessions are designed to be interactive to enable
participants to share past experiences and raise issues that are of
particular concern to them.

Session one
* Understanding Knowledge Management: This module will provide an overview
of knowledge management looking at some of the current trends and thinking.
There will also be an opportunity to explore the relevance of this to the
legal market.
* Client facing knowledge: This module will look at how a firm's knowledge
can be used to enhance client relationships. It will look at the benefits
and pitfalls of investing time and effort on bespoke knowledge products for
clients.
* Leadership, teamworking and motivation: This session examines what
motivates PSLs in their roles. It also considers PSL's as leaders and team
players.

including marketing and communication skills, to enhance your working
relationships with fee earners and business functions such as marketing, IT
and HR.

contract negotiation

Information managers who are responsible for negotiating information product
contracts are finding it hard to develop the skill set necessary for this
demanding task. Companies who operate in the global marketplace rightly want
their business deals to reflect that global marketplace in price and
content. On the "sell" side local account teams are expected to respond on
behalf of their global organisation but within a reward structure that often
does not reflect that customer expectation. Successful negotiation of
contracts demands a clear understanding of the brief, recognition of the
business context and the ability to translate service requirements into
specific deliverables. This course offers the opportunity to identify the
issues in contract negotiation and helps you learn some of the necessary
skills to deal with them.

speaker:
Pamela Clark
course fee: £295.00 + VAT (£346.63) includes buffet lunch and refreshments.

firstly to design robust record systems and secondly how this approach can
support knowledge management strategies within the organisation.

programme introduces the basic concepts of coaching, explains when coaching
is an appropriate leadership style and provides a structured approach for
you to start coaching your team for improved performance. There will be time
to practise your new skills on real live issues and receive feedback on your
progress as a coach.

meeting skills

Across the UK people are spending millions of hours each day in meetings.
The cost of these meetings probably runs to hundreds of millions of pounds -
is this money being invested or wasted? Many people complain that meetings
are too long, nothing is agreed, nothing is followed up - nothing is
achieved. This one-day programme will help ensure that your meetings have a
clear purpose and achieve it, are viewed as productive, action orientated
and fun.
The workshop will focus on the meeting experience of delegates and seek to
identify best practise before each delegate prepares their own meeting
make-over plan.

speaker:
David Fender, Consultant
course fee: £295.00 + VAT (£346.63) includes buffet lunch and refreshments
