The British Medical Association recently described how it had changed the
titles of many 'British Journals of...' to remove any suggestion of
parochiality, with considerable successs.  Librarians do, however, hate
title changes - and of course, if you change the journal's alphabetical
listing (as this would) your Impact Factor will be calculated separately for

Here are my pearls of wisdom.

All other issues aside, it seems to me that the title has international
appeal without it having to be spelled out in print. If subject matter
is common across territories then surely it will attract an
international audience through its very nature. In addition, the display
of a respected organisation's name in the title can lend authority and
credence to a publication.

The editor of one of our journals is considering changing the title to
try and make it more appealing internationally.  We would be very
grateful for feedback about whether a journal title change would
influences buying decisions. The journal is very international in
actuality, with a broadly based editorial board and a mix of articles
from around the world. However, does the name "Journal of the British
Menopause Society" likely put off readers/librarians abroad? If we
changed it to "Menopause Health" or "Annals of the Menopause" or
"Menopause & Ageing" with a subtitle of "journal of the British
Menopause Society", would this make readers/librarians more likely to
subscribe to it?

Any comments gratefully appreciated.
