Hi All,
=20
I am putting together a seminar paper on drugs in film. From the earlie=
st examples to the many more recent ones. It will have a heavy sociologic=
al bent - focussing on the ways film refracts certain social patterns and=
cultural contexts.
=20
Does anyone have any suggestions as to the essential films for inclusio=
n? Scenes of drug use? How film is able to represent drug experience? Dir=
ectors who have used drugs to make films or write them? etc etc
=20
Any ideas?

Thanks

Let me be the first to state the obvious: Terry Gilliam's "Fear and
Loathing in Las Vegas" is one of the films most committed to
representing drug experience on screen.
As for filmmakers using drugs to create their works: if you read through
Peter Biskind's book "Easy Riders and Raging Bulls" you'll get plenty of
fuel for that fire. I can't say how credible the book is, but with
stories about directors listing particular substances next to specific
scenes on Jack Nicholson's scripts in order to keep continuity over a
shoot, or Hal Ashby locking himself in the editing suite for days at a
time with pipe ablaze and acid aplenty, the book is well worth a read.
Randolph.
