I can only speak for myself: It is definitely not because of the steamy
lesbian scene that I like MD more that LH. There are so many details right
before our eyes that we sometimes miss significant differences between
films. That's why I sometimes oppose theory, because it leads to that
strange kind of ignorance which oversees the striking difference between
both films:
LH is a cold, abstract and cynical film, whereas MH isn't. There is
emotional depht, people are really crying over the loss of something (I
don't know what, but I wish I knew) in MH. It is melodramatic in some sense,
without being less artful or intellectual. It engages me on more than one
level, makes me think about it more than LH does.
That's the simple answer. If it hadn't been hidden right before my eyes
during the discussion I would have mentioned it earlier.
