Hi All,
There's an interesting account of the film essay aimed at students of the
Chicago Media Works at:
http://www.chicagomediaworks.com/2instructworks/3editing_doc/3editing_docinematicessay.html
The films of Ross McElwee (most recent being 'Bright Leaves' (2003)) are a
good example of the personal documentary (although perhaps not the film
essay per se as it is being discussed here).
Obviously, the films of Chris Marker are the pinnacle of the form, but
perhaps a very early example would be Jean Vigo's 'A propos de Nice' (1930).
And how about some of Geoffrey Jones' films?
Look forward to more thoughts on this discussion.
