Michael Renov writes in his recent book 'The Subject of
Documentary: "Direct address in fictional cinematic discourse is rare
indeed, except in instances of comedy."
He is writing on Haskell Wexler's 'Medium Cool' which has a great direct
address scene, but it was made in 1968. I don't think there would be too
many instances of direct address in Hollywood films of the 40s and 50s.
Take Renov's lead and check out the Bob Hope pictures. If the kid is
willing or allowed to expand it just one more decade into the 60s, there'd
be a horn o'plenty to choose from.
