The phrase 'Mother of the Avant-garde' can be found quoted by Laura Mulvey
in her essay 'Film, Feminism and the Avant-Garde'. However, Cecile Starr
refers to Deren as 'the mother of avant-garde film' in the New York Times in
1976. Don’t know if there is an earlier reference.???
