One of the most vivid depictions of the horrors
of Nazi concentration camps. Night and Fog
captures the voice of history, speaking of
unspeakable horrors. A dark tribute to those who
lost their lives during the Holocaust.
The films will be preceded by an illustrated
lecture by the editor of the book: Uncovering the
Holocaust: The International Reception of Night
and Fog. Using examples from critical reviews of
the film at the time of its release, including
its banning from the Cannes Film Festival in
1956, this presentation will track the history of
the appreciation of the film, now regarded as one
of the most important cinematic works to attempt
to deal with the horrors of the Holocaust and
which has become central to continuing debates
about Holocaust education and the place of moving
image work in the cultural memory of the
Holocaust.
