To take up the gender issue again: I wouldn't be so sure here, as
you're conflating the metaphorical (feminist critiques of
representation) with the literal. Doesn't in some way the literal
muteness FOREGROUND the question of metaphorical muteness? And how to
we deal with this when we're not considering The Piano, but an
example of female gothic such as The Spiral Staircase?
