My book, _The Cinema of Isolation: A History of Physical Disability in the
Movies_ (Rutgers, 1994), might be helpful. In it, I discuss a number of
U.S. films such as _Johnny Belinda_ that feature deaf-mute women. Of
course, not all mute women are deaf in the movies. One of the most famous
mutes -- Helen Capel of _The Spiral Staircase_ -- can hear perfectly well.
