I highly recommend *Movie Mutations. The Changing Face of Cinephilia* ,
edited by Jonathan Rosenbaum and Adrian Martin in 2003, in which film
critics all over the world are engaged in a discussion about the foundations
of film criticism.
Also very important are the works by french critic Serge Daney, but I don't
know which of his works are translated in English and in what editions they
are put together.
For one of the view theories on film criticism, see Victor Perkins `*Film as
Film* (1972) (defined as a metatheory of film criticism by Noel Carroll).
Perkins book is a classical, but always underrated work of film theory. He
has what many film theorist and philosophers don't and what a critic must
have: taste.
I Hope I could help you,
Herbert.
