Raging Bull: An interesting case given that the screenwriter, Schrader,
sees the character as unredeemed at the end whereas Scorsese sees Jake
as in some sense redeemed. The explicit use of religious imagery makes
this interesting. Redemption or lack of redemption can be identified as
a theme in other Scorsese movies also.
Pickpocket is another obvious case. Again, this is an important theme in
Bresson who is an obvious influence on Schrader / Scorsese. Certainly
worth looking at Diary of a Country Priest and Au hasard Balthazar for this.
Anthony Mann's The Naked Spur is a great example (and a great movie).
Abraham Polansky's Force of Evil. Many others.
