Check out Tarkovsky's ANDREI RUBLEV.
Oliver Stone's NIXON.
Bresson's PICKPOCKET and DIARY OF A COUNTRY PRIEST (others of his,
too, I guess).
It's a theme common to many biographical films (biopics), in the
profane version of "comeback".
All films about the life of Jesus?!
The Paul Schrader rip-off of Bresson's Pickpocket/remake of TAXI
DRIVER, LIGHT SLEEPER.
All films dealing with the Saul-to-Paul motif (of which there are
many in Hollywood). One that immediately comes to mind - also by
Oliver Stone - is WALL STREET. Yet another, and a biopic, is BORN ON
THE FOURTH OF JULY.
Not about redemption as a theme, but redemption through film (or
video, in this case): Sokurov's wonderful five-hour documentary about
Soviet troops on the border separating Tajikistan/Afghanistan, LES
VOIX DE L'AME/SPIRITUAL VOICES (1995).
