I would say some other Resnais films would also be appropriate, definitely
"Last Year at Marienbad", presenting variations of the story/memory of a
relationship between two people (or different instances of it, like a
particular short frame being repeated several times with slight variations
in angle, lighting, etc.) in a formally very complex and interesting way and
perhaps "Hiroshima Mon Amour" as well, where the personal relationship
dimension intertwines with the historical/political one of the memory of
WWII. Come to think of it, conceived in a broader way, any example of
several instances presented or perceived as in some ways similar (and
perhaps belonging to a common category), but in other ways different could
be seen as "variations on a theme". But this is probably too unspecific for
you!
by the way, I continually ask myself whether really such a small number of
people on this list respect the "don't include the text of the message you
are replying to" plea or does my digest version of the list do it
automatically or is it just me...??
