Euro (including 2 nights at the university hotel); this refers to the
authors of already submitted paper proposals, as well as to all who are

Department of Media and Audio-Visual Culture, University of Lodz
announces its
CALL FOR PAPERS
for International Conference
REDISCOVERING POLISH CINEMA:
HISTORY – IDEOLOGY – POLITICS
to be held 23-25 October 2006 in LODZ (Poland)

Various transformations in the social and cultural landscape have been
reshaping the way Polish cinema is understood, yet still there is little
clarity about its position within the area of politics and ideology. The
central theme of the conference addresses issues arising from these complex
relations in both the past and the present of Polish cinema.

The aim of the conference is to inspire incite dialogues, strengthen
research networks centered on the subject, and provide an opportunity for
scholars and students from all parts of the world to meet and debate on the
following topics:

v the role of cinema in the public sphere
v representations of history - the uses of the past to define/transform
collective memory
v propaganda in newsreels and broadcast media
v reframing “auteur cinema” in terms of its relationship towards politics
v the role of autobiography as a narrative strategy
v the influence of government sponsorship on production and distribution
v state censorship – subordination and dissent
v cinema as a tool for constructing and solidifying (or unmasking and
undermining) the claims of dominant ideologies
v religion and spirituality as repressed issues
v class and gender identities
v stereotypic images of other nations and ethnic minorities
v marginalized or under-represented viewpoints and experiences
v strategies of discord in Polish avant-garde and amateur cinema
v the growing recognition of diverse audience cultures and subcultures
v cultural and political tensions within the contemporary society
v a critical revision of existing accounts of Polish cinema

We encourage contributions from participants representing various
theoretical, philosophical and political approaches. Papers comparing
Polish cinema with case studies from other regions of East and Central
Europe are also welcome.

Location

The conference will be held at the University of Lodz, The Biedermann
Palace (ul. Franciszkanska 1/5, Lodz; http://free.art.pl/ktltf). The nearby
Conference Centre (ul. Kopcinskiego 16/18; http://www.csk.uni.lodz.pl)
provides accommodation. There's a direct airway from London to Lodz.

Fees

Conference fee is 100 EURO and covers admissions to all sessions,
conference materials, accommodation, opening reception, meals and
refreshments.

Every effort will be made to reduce conference costs; this, however, is
subject to the availability of funding. At the present stage University of
Lodz is unfortunately unable to assist its guests financially. Participants
are strongly encouraged to seek funding from national and international
sources to cover travel and accommodation expenses.

Submission

Papers (of approximately 20 minutes' length) can be delivered in English or
Polish (if necessary, simultaneous translation will be provided).

If you would like to present a paper, please send an outline to:

Dr Konrad Klejsa
Katedra Mediow i Kultury Audiowizualnej
University of Lodz
ul. Franciszkanska 1/5
91-431 Lodz, Poland
fax. (48 42) 66 55 133
email: [log in to unmask]

Deadline for proposals is 31 May 2006.

Proposals should include a 100-500 word abstract of the paper (MS Word
attachments only) plus a short bio (contact details and
institutional/departmental affiliation).

Further enquiries should be addressed to the organizers. More information,
including details of venues and special screenings, will be available in
June 2006 and sent directly to the participants.

We look forward to seeing you at the conference!
