Dear Ross:
I may be being too Aristotelean about this, but its not the stature of protagonists in crime that bothers me but their immorality. For example, harvey Keitel in Bad Lieutenant gets what he deserves. Henry Fonda in You Only Live Once might be a candidate, as we feel he is unjustly treated.
The Sam Shepherd character in Days of Heaven may well fit, though its been a long time since I've seen it.
