hello again!
i will try to explain my concern a litte bit more detailed. i cant even explain in german, so english is even worse...;-)
but, ill try:
...
the off: "a picture is not only visible but also readable"
lets say: deleuze distinguishes between 3 types of off.
- relative hors-champ (its like music comes from inside the picture - a piano-player on screen but you cant see him)
- absolute hors-champ (could be a voice over - an allknowing voice)
- off off (here it gets really complicated. cinema of marguerite duras,...)
I was thinking of a possible structure of my thesis and it could look like this:
1) basic description of "the off". what is it - technically (montage, parallelmontage, framing (kadrierung, cadre), subjective shot)
what is it - narrative - the narrative (symbolic) off. which is important for the story of the
movie.
for example 2 people talking about a third one, which is the main character in the movie, but never shown (e.g.: hitchcocks "rope", the dead person is there, but somekind in the off; antonionis "L'Aventura" - looking for a woman, its some kind of a "personalized off")
2)different theories and schools about the off
- philosophical school
- psychoanalytical school
- feministic filmtheory
- audience research
- formalistic filmtheory
5 different perspectives about the off-theory
3) analysing different genres and their "off-use"
for example the off is very often used in horror-movies or thrillers
...
4) catgorical research of this 4 oppositions:
inside - outside
present - not present
visible - invisible
"diesseits - jenseits" - difficult to explain in english: maybe: this world - netherworld
whats the difference...
5) comparrison of different directors and their connection to the concept of the off
im thinking of: bresson, antonioni, godard, also hitchcock, resnais...
(there are a lot)
godard or marguerite duras use the off in a very specific way... picture and text do not fit. its different - both are independent and autonomous...
(maybe i could connect point 3 and 5)
thank u very much for your literature-tips!
i hope my explanation is clear enough...
literature i already got in contact with:
deleuze, chion, henry gass (about the cinema of marguerite duras), bresson (notes on the cinematographer), bazin (what is cinema?),
thanks again,
bis bald eva
