It seems to me useful to address the dominant religion that unifies much of
the Middle East but divides the rest of it. Moustapha Akkad's THE MESSAGE
(IR-RISSALA) was controversial when it appeared yet had the financial
support of influential Muslim countries (and the director had been Sam
Peckinpah's assistant).
You might also consider BASS, YA BAHAR, the first movie produced in Kuwait,
as a dramatization of the pre-petroleum history of the Gulf region (a much
fairer picture of social conditions than LAWRENCE OF ARABIA).

Subject: middle east on film?
I'm revamping a course on the middle east on film for the spring, and I
wanted to ask for any "favorite" recommendations--readings or films or
approaches.
Currently, I'm starting with Lawrence of Arabia and Battle of Algiers.
Then, I have popular films from Egypt, Turkey, and Iran. A section on
imprisonment: Duvar, Wedding in Galilee, and Beyond the Walls). A section
on Gender, Sexuality, and the Family, (Kadosh, Man of Ashes, ?). And
finally, disapora/transnational productions: Turtles Can Fly, Border Cafe,
and ?.
I'm using a course pack since I cannot find a book that covers enough
material.
Thanks for any idea or complications,
Brian
