Dear Colleague,
I would like to draw your attention to an international conference which
is coming up in September 2007 in Oxford, UK
[http://www.cfbt.com/UKFIET]. While the conference usually focuses on
development and international education and global learning, one of the
strands at the next meeting has a specific focus on issues related to
environmental education, the UN Decade on ESD and paradigms for growth
[http://www.cfbt.com/UKFIET/sections/themedsection/educationforsustainabledev.aspx].
Further details are attached below and can be found on the conference
website.
Please consider submitting an abstract, and circulating this to
colleagues, students and others who might be interested in presenting or
attending.
Kind regards
Jutta Nikel

Education for sustainable development and quality education
Convenors:
Jutta Nikel, University of Bath [log in to unmask]
Kelly Teamey, University of Birmingham [log in to unmask]
The last decade has seen ‘sustainable development’ and ‘Education for
Sustainable Development’ (ESD) grow in influence in policy-making at all
levels. The United Nations has signalled the global importance of ESD by
highlighting its close links with the Education For All (EFA) agenda and
the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and declaring a Decade for ESD
(2005-2014). Here, a key challenge of ESD lies in how we re-think
education quality in terms of diverse places for and communities of
learners, and its invitation to explore what sustainability means to
livelihood, lifestyle, well-being and community development.
In this theme, we invite papers that explore:
* The meaning(s) ESD has / can have / might have in low income
countries within and beyond EFA and the MDGs, e.g. how ESD in low
income countries is interpreted beyond providing ‘greater access
to basic education’
* How quality education addresses issues such as environmental
sustainability, intergenerational justice and responsibility, or
those regarding effectiveness, efficiency or equity
* Non-formal and formal education initiatives and their progress for
implementing ESD and DESD in a low income context
* Conceptualisations of quality education which address or critique
concepts such as sustainable livelihoods, lifestyles, well-being
and community development.
