Your students can gain valuable fieldwork experience as an active member
of a Global Vision International research expedition during their summer
break or after their studies. Expedition members are required to join the
GVI research team throughout the year to participate in biodiversity
studies in Kenya, near the border of Tanzania. GVI is particularly
interested in recruiting students from the fields of environmental
science, zoology, biology and other related degree courses. Please share
this information with your students (and fellow lecturers).
Expedition Focus
The governments of Kenya have expressed a strong interest to contain the
southern coastline into a marine conservation area, but have neither the
finance to do so, nor the scientific understanding to justify it. GVI will
support these organisations, in conjunction with the Kenyan Wildlife
service (KWS), by supplying and training additional personnel and
supplying equipment to examine how the local communities effect and
utilise the region’s natural resources. The expedition also aims to assist
these communities in benefitting from their resources in a sustainable
manner.
Expedition members are needed for periods of 5, 10 and 15 weeks. Projects
include marine mammal research (specifically dolphins), incidental marine
mega-fauna research (including turtles, whalesharks and manta rays),
wildlife research on species such as Colobus monkeys, environmental
education and community infrastructure development. No experience is
necessary as the GVI training programme will provide a baseline and
holistic understanding of all aspects of the area and project work.
