Dear Gemma, Irina and all,
I would second Irina's caution about putting pictures of 'virgin'
fieldwork on the internet. There are a plethora of good photos in
anthropology books that have already been published and I am presuming
(hoping) already have permission for from the people in them. Holiday
pics are one thing, anthropology pics another. I am just completing my
doctoral research in visual anthropology and the ethics of what one can
show has been a central dynamic. The bottom line is negotiate, ask the
people in the photo if it's ok for the picture to be on the net. Then,
if the photo is chosen, there should be a caption saying with "kind
permission of 'photographer' and 'person A, B, C etc." - this should
somehow offset the 'freakshow' element of photos as the viewer is told
that the people in the photograph are happy with being watched, and
there is power in that.
