The human resource inputs to a PhD program which is on the top of the
educational heirarchy will depend on the feeding systems bellow.
If only we can try and improve the Quality of Design programs(graduate
and Masters) we will find more motivated students wanting to persue
Research.
Of course there are many other problems both personal and social that
need to be surmounted by a PhD scholar as pointed out by Rosan, but the
least we can do is to inspire and motivate younger minds in Design.
Always wonder why Design educaters themselves resist change while they
passionatly champion 'Design' as Creative /new/ original etc etc.!
Most arguments are on why we should not change so as to preserve the
purity of Design and protect it from contamination of other disicipline rather than
how fast we need to change in order to catch up with the other
disciplines!
Instead of 'Dropout' we need to discuss 'Dropin'! Too few are opting for
research in Design in the first place.
Just an observation.
