Thanks to Alex for a useful question. In the UK there are a good number
of opportunities to undertake Doctoral research in Design, including
Industrial Design. I can think of at around 15 universities and
specialist colleges which support doctoral students in industrial design
and the full number is probably bigger.
There is a good source to consult - the Art and Design Index to Theses
(ADIT) compiled by Tom Fisher and Judith Mottram can be found at
http://www.shu.ac.uk/research/c3ri/adit/ and it indicates most
institutions that provide PhDs in Design. If you select the advanced
search and look for subjects that include the word design, sorted by
institution, you will find around 460 theses starting at Buckinghamshire
Chilterns College and ending with University of Wolverhampton (actually
it ends with University of York but I happen to know that they don't do
design - it's a design related PhD in the Sociology Dept there). Of
course my own University is in there. Many places only list a few theses
but the number is rising rapidly so check the current student numbers
and completions when you inquire.
The system here is a little different from some other countries in that,
although Doctoral training is increasingly systematic, we tend not to
have specific "programmes" of study in particular subjects and the
student's individual research project is absolutely central to the whole
experience so you need to have some ideas about that before you start.
The main thing to look for is whether the research interests and
experience of staff in the department that you are considering are
related to the research that you wish to undertake, you need to be
confident that your supervisors will have an interest in and understand
your research topic and, if they know what they are doing, they will
have the same concern when considering you as a student. Of course you
will also want to know that the research training programme is well
organised and there is a supportive community of research students.
Best regards
Chris
