Session Title: Current Trends and Research in Geographic Information Systems and
Science (GIS) [in association with the Geographic Information Science Research
Group of the Royal Geographical Society]
Convenor: Mairéad de Róiste
Contact Email: [log in to unmask]
In recent years, the benefits of incorporating GIS into the methodologies of new
research areas has been acknowledged while GIS use in established areas has also
expanded. Recent events, such as the launch of Google Earth, have facilitated
increased access by a larger global audience to Geographic Information than was
previously imagined possible. GIS projects in Ireland and the UK have spanned a
number of key areas, including but not limited to transport, planning, public
participation, Internet service delivery, environment, crime and archeology.
This session calls for papers discussing current undertakings in the GIS arena
across the entire spectrum of GIS research. By encouraging research from
potentially disparate areas, this session hopes to highlight the emerging
trends in GIS in this rapidly changing environment.
