Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers
                        Annual Conference 2006
'Global social justice and environmental sustainability',
                    30 August - 1st September 2006
                                London

                         ** Call for Papers **
***Deadline for abstract submission: 24 January***

The GIScRG are hosting a number of organised sessions at the RGS Annual
Conference in August/September this year.

The sessions are
- GIS and Visualisation for Communication and Analysis
- Historical GIS: The state of the art
- Participation and GIS
- Postgraduate Research in Geographical Information Science
- Current Trends and Research in Geographic Information Systems and
Science

The details of each of the sessions are given below. Authors interested
in submitting an abstract of not more than 200 words should fill out the
attached abstract submission form and return it to the appropriate session
convenor (given below) before the 24th of January.

Further details about the conference and abstract submission guidelines
are available at http://www.rgs.org/category.php?Page=ac2006

Kind regards

Session Title: GIS and Visualisation for Communication and Analysis

Convenors: Dr Linda See and Dr Alison Heppenstall
Contact Emails: [log in to unmask] & [log in to unmask]

Session Abstract:
Visualisation is an important tool for the understanding and analysis of complex
multi-dimensional data sets. It also provides a valuable method of
communicating results within the scientific community and to the wider public.
The use of visualisation techniques can enhance our ability to understand,
present and analyse data in new and interesting ways.
This session aims to bring together researchers using or developing novel
visualisation techniques that provide new insights into complex datasets and
make the results accessible to a wide audience.

Session Title: Historical GIS: The state of the art

Convenor: Dr Ian Gregory
Contact Email: [log in to unmask]

Session Abstract:
Recent years have seen a rapid growth in interest in the use of Geographical
Information Systems (GIS) to study historical geography. This has developed to
such an extent that the field has become known as historical GIS. The range of
topics covered by the discipline now ranges from highly quantitative studies
based on, for example, census data, to the highly qualitative drawing on
sources such as texts and photographs. This session presents some of the
international leaders in the field who demonstrate the range and diversity of
approaches to historical GIS and show what the technology can offer to the
discipline of historical geography.

Session Title: Participation and GIS

Convenors: Christine Dunn and Rachel Pain (Durham University, UK)
Contact Email: [log in to unmask]

Session Abstract:
Following critiques in the 1990s around the social implications and
theoretical assumptions of Geographical Information Systems, recent
years have witnessed a shift towards more 'socially aware' approaches to
GIS applications. These newer framings of GIS draw on various forms of
community participation and give privilege to local and indigenous
geographical knowledge as well as to more formal spatial data. Alongside
these developments there has been a recent surge of interest in
participatory research approaches in Geography with contributions both
to theory and practice.

In bringing together researchers who are developing bottom-up approaches
to GIS this session aims to consider some of the challenges faced in
attempting to represent multiple geographical perspectives through a
visual information technology. The session also provides an opportunity
to explore some of the different manifestations of what has been
variously labelled as, inter alia, Participatory GIS, Public
Participation GIS and Community-integrated GIS.

Papers are invited from those working with participatory approaches to
spatial issues, however loosely or tightly coupled to GIS technology.
Papers are welcome on specific applications as well as on broader
conceptual themes around participation and GIS.

==================================================
Session Title: Postgraduate Research in Geographical Information Science

Convenor: Christian Castle
Contact Email: [log in to unmask]

Session Abstract:
The purpose of this session is to provide a forum for postgraduate research in
the field of Geographical Information Science, and Geographical Information
System applications. This is a continuation of postgraduate orientated
collaboration between the GIScRG and PGF that follows very successful sessions
held at the 2003 & 2005 annual conferences. Similar to previous years, the
session will be sponsored in kind by the Ordnance Survey, in the form of a
prize awarded for the best paper.
Papers are encouraged in any area of Geographical Information Science and
Systems, the following themes are particularly encouraged: GIS applications;
geographical data issues; uncertainty and error; spatial analysis; 2D & 3D
visualisation.

==================================================
Session Title: Current Trends and Research in Geographic Information Systems and
Science (GIS)

Convenors: Mairéad de Róiste and Dr Robert Abrahart
Contact Email: [log in to unmask]

Session Abstract:
Recent events, such as the launch of Google Earth, have facilitated increased
access by a larger global audience to Geographic Information than was
previously imagined possible. In recent years, the benefits of incorporating
GIS into the methodologies of new research areas has been acknowledged while
GIS use in established areas has also expanded.

This session calls for papers discussing current undertakings in the GIS arena
across the entire spectrum of GIS research. By encouraging research from
potentially disparate areas, this session hopes to highlight the emerging
trends in GIS in this rapidly changing environment.
