Thursday 26th January
UK GeoForum special: Mapping, disaster response and global emergencies - on
the ground experiences
Speaker: David Spackman OBE HonRICS, MapAction
Location
RICS
12 Great George Street
London SW1P
Time
1815 for 1830, lecture scheduled to finish at 1930.
The lecture is free of charge and open to all.
Background
Immediately following the Tsunami Disaster and at the request of the United
Nations Disaster Assessment Centre (UNDAC), an 11-person team of highly
trained, highly skilled volunteers from MapAction deployed to Colombo, Sri
Lanka.
Arriving in the early hours of 29 December, they were one of the first
foreign NGOs to arrive. Within hours, MapAction had set up as part of the
newly formed Sri Lankan Government's Centre for National Operations (CNO)
and was producing its first maps for the Sri Lankan Government and for the
International Aid Agencies, showing real-time information of the affected
areas and its population. This is essential to assist logistics within the
country and to help all provide aid more effectively and efficiently.
MapAction employ satellite imagery, GPS and other high tech methods to
achieve the accuracy and timeliness sought by international aid agencies.
David Spackman will speak on the difficulties of working in a hostile post
disaster environment, where humanitarian considerations are all.
