Stanley Cavell's "Pursuits of Happiness - The Hollywood Comedy of
Remarriage" (Harvard 1981): Though it's not about "vitalism", it's about
the"philosophy of life" in the sense of posing the philosophical question
about the 'beauty' of our life forms. Cavell reads films such as *The Awful
Truth* or *The Lady Eve* as contributions to moral philosophy, but they are
not telling us what to do but how to live: the central couples of the films
expose themselves to their viewers, having a lot fun, finding pleasure in
the pure presence one for another, overcoming distrust, showing us how to
turn the dullness of everyday life into in a 'comedy of dailiness'. In his
readings Cavell refers to 'philosophers of life' such as Emerson, Thoreau
and Nietzsche. Even Wittgenstein is turned into a philosopher of life as
well.
Some essays from "Cavell on Film" (Albany 2005), for example "The Good of
Films" oder "Moral Reasoning: Teaching from the Core" might be helpful for
an overview of this approach.
