Alan, you're probably thinking of Kracauer rather than Bazin, for the
former of whom film is "the redemption of physical reality."
A question pops up here: we have so many examples of redemption in
film that I find myself wondering what exactly is the relationship
and/or difference between redemption and catharsis? Any thoughts on
this?
