Do you mean run the compiler front-end only? Almost all compiles are
"compile-only" in that they run the front-end and optimizer to produce
an object file. If all you want is syntax checking, then running only
the front end is sufficient (and a lot faster).

Turning off all optimizations is pretty easy. Turning on all
optimizations could involve a very long list of things, many of which
might be inappropriate for a specific platform and even contradictory.
Perhaps a related interesting piece of information: What are the
compiler's default levels of optimization.

Do you really mean set default reals to 8 bytes? That is usually what I
see available and is different from setting them to "double precision".
