CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Innovative Approaches to Conflict Resolution across the Disciplines September 29-30, 2006
Binghamton University, Binghamton, New York
Proposals are invited for the symposium "Innovative Approaches to Conflict Resolution across the Disciplines," to be held at Binghamton University, State University of New York. Interpersonal and intergroup conflict resolution is emerging as an important area of study in both professional
disciplines (e.g., social work, education, nursing,
management) and academic disciplines (e.g., human development, sociology, anthropology, women's studies, psychology, political science). It is important to address how conflict resolution is conceptualized and practiced both professionally and academically in order to identify commonalities and
distinctions. The symposium will provide faculty, students, staff and members of the community with the opportunity to engage with and explore critically an array of principles and techniques - including multicultural approaches - that are currently
utilized across the disciplines. The schedule will include keynote
speakers, a variety of presentations, and opportunities for discussion.
Proposals for papers and workshops should include the following
materials:
1) An abstract of 250 words in length that addresses a major
component/example of conflict resolution from the presenter's disciplinary or interdisciplinary perspective. The content of the intended presentation can be conceptual, practical, or some combination.
The content can cover a wide array of topics. Examples for papers and workshops might include:
o Multicultural approaches to nonviolent communication
o Paradigms of student-teacher conflict
o Social work practice and conflict resolution
o Descriptions of family mediation center processes
o Conflict resolution and social justice
o Impact of diversity (e.g., gender, race, ethnicity, ability,
age, sexual orientation, class) on conflict resolution style
o Conflict resolution in the age of technology
o Research on workplace mediation
o Global challenges in conflict resolution
o Alternative dispute resolution and the legal system
o Teaching conflict resolution skills to children and families
2) A one-page (maximum) biographical sketch that includes an
explanation of interest in and commitment to conflict resolution.
