I am analyzing dental and postcranial pathologies on early Holocene bison.
I'm running across a patterned 'lesion(s)' that at first I thought was
pathological but is common in many of the assemblages I'm observing,
including some modern, and so now don't know what to think. They are
ovoid 'abcesses', usually 1 cm in mlen, and are always located on the
axial surface just below the proximal epiphyseal margin, near the caudal
aspect. Generally there is a single foci, though occasionally two large
lesions are present. I'm at a loss on whether they are indeed pathological
or are a regular feature of the anatomy that I have somehow missed over
the years. Any ideas/thoughts? I can send pics if needed. Any help is
appreciated.
