ISSUE No.7 - Digitizing photographic heritage: the PHOTHEREL project by =
Jan Baetens
Photherel is an online project addressing the complex information =
structure offered by visual media, and in particular photographic =
heritage, documenting the (fairly) recent past. It touches on several =
domains: visual and media literacy, digital repositories of visual =
cultural heritage, conservation of endangered visual cultural heritage, =
distributed course content creation for e-learning, and using a museum =
or archive in an e-learning context. This article deals mainly with the =
basic theoretical stances defended during the elaboration of the =
project, which attempts to valorize the cultural aspects of =
digitization.

SUBMISSIONS
Research Issues welcomes submissions that provide overviews of new and =
emerging themes and research topics, reflections on the process of =
research, reviews of particular research methods or techniques, or =
discussions of current issues in art, design and media research. Each =
issue consists of one paper focused on a distinct topic and which =
provides guidance to further reading and resources for further =
exploration. The primary audience is research students, but the =
publication is also likely to be of interest to research degree =
supervisors and other researchers in art, design and media.

Dear all
I am about to move to Swinburne University, Faculty of Design =
(Australia) where professional doctorates alongside PhDs are offered. I =
am interested in looking at contexts in the UK where professional =
doctorates are offered and what the issues are, e.g. practice theory =
balance, project and text. Any thoughts on the list?

Hi,
I have written a short account of some aspects of Professional
Doctorates in the UK in a review of Doctoral Studies in Design in 2003:
RUST, C. (2003) Many Flowers, Small Leaps Forward: debating doctoral
education in design Art Design and Communication in Higher Education.
Vol 1 No 3 (Invited paper)
You can find a pre-press copy here:
http://www.chrisrust.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/academic/abstracts/adche%20rev
iew.htm
The specific discussion of Professional Doctorates starts at the bottom
of page 5 (of the pre-press version) but it is set against the whole
paper. The main issue is that UK professional doctorates (eg in
business or education) may have a greater taught and subject-specific
content than UK PhD's (maybe not much more than PhD's in some other
countries) but they are still essentially research degrees.
I'm not aware of a Design Prof Doc programme in the UK but I daresay
somebody has one or is planning one? University of East London has a
Professional Doctorate in Fine Art at
http://www.uel.ac.uk/programmes/ava/postgraduate/summary/docfineart.htm
Their outline makes it clear that the practical work is a "programme of
research" not a programme of professional practice. I do not know what
that means in reality but perhaps somebody from UEL is listening and can
tell us more?
regards
Chris
