Dear Guido et. al.
Now, how would you delineate the difference between this list and a list of the most significant contributions to Film-Philosophy? What I mean to focus on are the similarities and differences between film theory and film-philosophy. Or else there is little difference and we may as well fold ourselves into the other discipline (as so many Universities and State Systems are doing anyway).
But there is more than a question of the Academy at stake...Noel Carroll has criticized film theorists for being ideologists, in the pejorative sense of the term. That is, they are too committed to their overall theories to see the trees for the forest. What Bordwell and Carroll are calling for is a piecemeal discussion of film that refuses to take a set of assumptions as defining the social interests of a certain group (the group in this case is professional academicians).
With that in mind, what differentiates film theory from film-philosophy?
"For beauty is the beginning of terror we are still able to bear, and why we love it so is because it so serenely disdains to destroy us" Rilke's First Duino Elegy
