The Mining Journal 25.3.1837 & 18.11.37 quotes from "Mr Bushell's
Abridgment of the Lord Chancellor Bacon's Philosophical Theory in Mineral
Prosecutions" 1659 & refers to adits proposed at Hingston Down & Guinop
(Gwennap, perhaps Poldice?). There are various clues in the quote re
Hingston Down to suggest a location, but in view of the numerous adits
driven in that area over the years it would probably be impossible to
locate his adit, if it was ever driven.
On Mendip W. Stanton (Mendip The Complete Caves and a View of the Hills
1977 edn p. 173) suggests the site known as Wheel Pit, 5477 5143, as
connected to Bushell's Level. Cavers (particularly the Bristol Exploration
Club) have been interested in this area for many years, & much is written
up in the Belfry Bulletin. It may be worth contacting Tony Jarret at BAT
products, Wells, for more details.
There was an article in (I think) Industrial Archaeology about the Talybont
mines by Simon Hughes, sorry full details not to hand, which I think gives
a location for Bushell's adit there.
Did you manage to get a location for the entrance at Combe Martin?
