Many thanks. I suppose the reply could well be that he was the
underachiever of the family: in addition to his father and brother becoming
bishops, his sister, Dame Elizabeth (1840-1932), was the first Principal of
Lady Margaret Hall and founder of St Hugh's College, Oxford. I don't
remember seeing her entry in the ODNB, but she must be there: there was a
concerted effort to get more women in. Not a problem for the nineteenth and
twentieth centuries, of course, but a real headache for earlier periods even
when techniques such as quotas and women-only shortlists were employed...
