medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (5. December) is the feast day of:
Crispina (d. 304) Crispina was a major Numidian martyr. She was a
noblewoman, a wife and mother. She was arrested during the Great
Persecution and beheaded.
Sabas (d. 532) Sabas was a Cappadocian who became a monk near
Jerusalem. He moved from there to the desert near Jericho and
gradually collected a large number of disciples, forming them into a
semi-eremitical community. In 493 he became archimandrite over all
the eremitical monks of Palestine. The monastery of Mar Saba still
exists; it was restored by the Russian government in 1840.
Sola (d. 794) Sola was one of the many English followers of St.
Boniface. He retired to a hermitage, which became the religious
center of the surrounding area; he founded the monastery of
Solnhofen, west of Eichstatt.
Christina of Markyate (d. 1161) Christina was the daughter of a
wealthy Saxon merchant family. She made a private vow of
virginity---but her parents arranged a marriage for her (which she
refused to consummate). A hermit helped C. go into hiding, and she
ended up taking refuge with a recluse. She took to the reclusive
life permanently, enjoying many visions, and attracted so many other
women that she ended up as a prioress.
Bartholomew of Mantua (blessed) (d. 1495) Bartholomew Fanti was a
Carmelite of Mantua. He was one of the many famous Italian preachers
of the fifteenth century (one wonders how Italy could have been such
a mess in the period with such religious eloquence going around all
the time). B's cult was confirmed in 1909.
