WHY? other than all scholarship should be careful, is there any particular
reason this matter of investigation requires a special warning?
The Council of Vienne
> (c. 24; Clem. 5. 1. 1) decreed in 1312 >
Which means that by 1312 European scholars in general knew that the Jews and
Arabs had manuscripts of particular value. Islamic influence in Europe must be
significant at this point to warrant the establishment of 'Chairs.'
--Already "zero", a conceopt borrowed from India by Muslims, has shown up in
manuscripts, as well as Arabic numerals (11th century astrological texts)
--There is the matter of Pope Sylvester(999-1003), the extent of his study of
Arabic is debated, but Arab tradition says that he studied in several Arab
universities before becoming pope, including as the one at Fez, Morocco.
--There is the matter of Petrus Alfonsi (1062--1110), a converted Jew who had
been educated in Arab Spain, and later translated Arab tales into Latin in
England.
The study of Islamic influences in Europe is and integral part of medieval
studies without which the study of medieval Europe is incomplete.
