medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (30. December) is also the feast day of:
1. Roger of Canne (d. 1129?). Today's less well known saint from the
Regno is a twelfth-century bishop from Apulia. That we know practically
nothing about him as a person may make him less than ideal for inclusion
in potted notices of saints selected for their exemplary qualities. But
the transfer of his remains in the thirteenth century from Canne to
Barletta is not without interest. A brief account of it will be found
in the Archives at:

Some views of Barletta's cathedral (which in the fourteenth century
inherited various items from the then already ruinous one of Canne) are
here:

The last two photographs on this page are views of the remains of
Canne's medieval cathedral:

2. Lawrence of Frazzano' (d. 1162). A wandering Greek saint from
Norman-ruled insular Sicily, L. finished his career at the monastery of
San Filippo di Fragala', one of Hellenic Christianity's leading
institutions on the island after the Latin conquest. A brief account of
him will be found in the Archives at:

That account credited L.'s absence from the RM with a role in keeping
him out of many calendrically organized books of saints and the like.
But he is listed in the new version, which cites his austere life and
courageous preaching.

Best, and a happy New Year to all,
