medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (30. December) is the feast day of:
Anysius (d. c. 410) Anysius became bishop of Thessalonica in 383.
He was a supporter of John Chrysostom, that controversial figure, and
also had closer ties to the bishop of Rome than eastern church
politics of his time encouraged. A. was made patriarchal vicar in
Illyricum---which became for centuries a contested ground between
Rome and Constantinople.
Egwin (d. 717) Egwin was a member of the Mercian royal family who
became bishop of Worcester in c. 692. He was perhaps too zealous in
correcting other people's morals: a faction developed in his see that
denounced E. and forced him to withdraw from his post. E. made a
penitential pilgrimage to Rome and was vindicated by the pope. On
his return he founded the monastery of Evesham.
Sebastian of Esztergom (blessed) (d. 1036) Sebastian (Sebestyen)
became the second archbishop of Esztergom in 1002. He became Stephen
of Hungary's chief advisor on establishing Christianity among the
Magyars. They worked together at conversion, organizing dioceses,
founding monasteries, etc.
Margaret Colonna (blessed) (d. 1280) Margherita Colonna was a
daughter of one of Italy's great families. She refused to marry and
settled in a villa in Palestrina, where she took to caring for the
sick and poor. M. founded a convent of Poor Clares there, although
she was too ill to join herself. M. won a reputation for working
miracles while gradually dying of cancer. Her cult was confirmed in
1847.
