Today (28. December) is the feast day of:
The Holy Innocents (c. 4 BCE) The children of Bethlehem, killed off
in Herod's attempt to get rid of the baby messiah. This feats has
been kept since the fifth century
Theodore the Sanctified (d. 368) Theodore was a disciple of St.
Pachomius, whose monastery at Tabennesi he joined. He became
Pachomius' assistant, but Pachomius thought T. was becoming too
prideful at the thought of succeeding as abbot, so he blocked T's
election. T. ended up in charge anyway, ruling for 22 years.
Rumilus and Conindrius (d. c. 450) Legend tells that R and C were
the first bishops of the Isle of Man, perhaps sent by St. Patrick.
Antony of Lerins (d. c. 520) Antony was a native of Lower Pannonia.
He became a monk and then a hermit near Lake Como. He got too famous
for his comfort and finally fled to Gaul to escape his fans, where he
became a monk at Lerins.
Matthia of Matelica (blessed) (d. c. 1300) Matthia was a daughter of
the count of Nazzarei. She became a Poor Clare despite her father's
objections. M. served as abbess of Matelica (in the March of Ancona)
for about 40 years. Miracles were reported at her tomb.
