medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
My two cents worth. Ever notice that in folklore and religion, male is a
default gender? When it is not important that the character be female or male
then it is male.
Angels are a case in point. Do angels father or bear children? Oh yes there is
that obscure passage in Genesis about the bene elohim, but first you would have
to establish that these were angels--something some believe and others do not.
But for all intents and purposes angels are male by default.
