medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (23. December) is the feast day of:
Ten martyrs of Crete (d. 250) Victims of the Decian persecution.
Legend tells that the ten refused to foreswear Christianity, were
arrested, dragged to prison, beaten, stoned, tortured, and finally
executed by sword.
Servulus (d. 590) Servulus appears in one of Gregory the Great's
homilies. S. was a paralytic beggar who lived on alms and gave all
he could to other needy people. He bought some books of the Bible
and got people to read them to him.
Hartmann (blessed) (d. 1164) Hartmann became a canon at Passau after
his education. He reformed several monasteries and canonries, and
became bishop of Brixen in 1140. He supported the papacy in its
fights with Conrad III and Frederick I. H's cult was confirmed in
1784.
Thorlac (d. 1193) Thorlac of Skalholt was an Icelandic bishop,
venerated both there and in Norway. Thorlac Thorhallsson pioneered
church reform in Iceland, especially fighting the traditional
practice of influential men presenting priests for appointment in
their "own" churches. The Althing declared T a saint five years
after his death. John Paul II confirmed his cult.
Margaret of Savoy (d. 1464) Margaret was a daughter of Count Amadeus
of Savoy; her mother was sister to one of the Avignon popes. M.
married the marquis of Montferrat, and when he died she refused to
marry again and settled down to a life of good works. She founded a
convent at Alba. Her cult was confirmed in 1669.
John of Kanti (d. 1473) Kanti, for those who don't know it, is near
Oswiecim in Poland. John was the son of a prosperous family. He
studied at the university of Cracow, became a priest (with a pretty
unsuccessful spell in charge of a parish), and ended up teaching at
Cracow for the rest of his life. J. was famous as a scholar and as
an ascetic. He was canonized in 1767.
