medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (22. December) is the feast day of:
Chaerymon, Ischyrion, and others (d. 250) In a letter, Dionysius of
Alexandria told that during the Decian persecution many Egyptian
Christians were driven out (or fled) into the desert and died there.
Many others were enslaved. He tells especially about the aged Bishop
Chaerymon of Nilopolis who, with his wife, took refuge in the Arabian
mountains and was never seen again. Ischyrion was in service to an
Egyptian magistrate. He was ordered to sacrifice to the state gods,
refused, and was then mutilated and impaled.
Jutta of Diessenberg (blessed) (d. 1136) Jutta was the sister of
Count Meginhard of Spanheim. She became a recluse attached to the
monastery of Disibodenberg. Among other work, Jutta is best known
for teaching and encouraging the youthful Hildegard of Bingen. J.
formed her disciples into a community, serving as their prioress.
Adam of Loccum (blessed) (d. 1210) Adam was a Cistercian, sacristan
of the monastery of Loccum in Hanover. The source for his life is
Caesarius of Heisterbach, who tells of A's miraculous cures from
several sicknesses.
