medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (20. December) is the feast day of:
Ammon and companions (d. 250) More Alexandian martyrs of the Decian
persecution. A contemporary letter tells that a Christian was
arrested and started to waver while on trial. Some of the guards
were Christians and started making encouraging gestures. The judge
noticed, made an inquiry, and Ammon and four companions broke ranks
and declared themselves Christians. They were executed with the
prisoner.
Philogonius of Antioch (d. 324) Philogonius was a lawyer who was
made bishop of Antioch in 319. Little more is known about him,
except the contents of a John Chrysostom sermon that concentrates on
Philogonius' joys in heaven, rather than the events of his life.
Dominic of Silos (d. 1073) Dominic was of peasant stock, but was
still accepted at the monastery of San Millan de la Cogolla (was it
easier for a poor man to become a monk in Navarre than north of the
Pyrenees?). D. became prior and a great reformer. Driven away by
Garcia III of Navarre over a property dispute, D. and two companions
were welcomed by Ferdinand I of Castile. D. became prior at Silos,
which he reformed to very good effect.
