medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Does Jerome's Life of Paul of Thebes represent the kind of story you are
looking for? According to Jerome, Paul preceded Antony as a desert
hermit, and when Antony heard of Paul, he sought out the older man's
hermitage. As the two talked, a raven brought a loaf of bread, and Paul
explained that the bird had fed him for years, but on that particular day
it brought twice the usual ration of bread. Then the two argued, each one
saying the other should have the honor of breaking the bread.
