medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Could the phrase be a translation or paraphrase from Augustine's De Civitate Dei where he raises this question in Book XXII, chap. 8? I don't have the Latin handy, but Bettenson's Penguin translation open that chapter: "Why, it is asked, do no miracles occur nowadays, such as occurred (you maintain) in former times?"
