medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (15. December) is the feast day of:
Valerian and other martyrs of North Africa (d. 457 and 482) Another
batch of victims of the Vandal persecution in North Africa. Valerian
was an elderly bishop who refused to give up the sacred vessels of
his church (which sounds more like Diocletian than the Arian king
Genseric). So he was driven out of the city, with orders that nobody
give him aid and comfort, so he died. Included in this feast is a
group of consecrated virgins who were branded, enslaved, and/or
driven into the desert at the orders of King Huneric.
Paul of Latros (d. 956) Paul was a hermit in Bithynia, who lived in
a cave on Mt. Latros. He attracted followers who distracted him so
much that after 12 years he moved to another part of the mountain,
visiting his spiritual sons occasionally to encourage them.
Eventually P. went to the island of Samos, hiding in a cave there
until he was discovered---so he re-established 3 ruined lauras to
hold his disciples.
