medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (10. December) is the feast day of:
Gregory III (d. 741) Gregory, a Syrian priest living in Rome, won
election by acclamation as pope in 731. He was the last pope to have
his election ratified by the exarch of Ravenna (acting for the
Byzantine emperor). In fact, Gregory's conflict with Emperor Leo III
is what ended that long dependency. Gregory refused to accept
imperial iconoclast edicts, even calling a synod that decreed
excommunication of anyone who destroyed an icon or condemned their
veneration. The emperor was not amused. He sent a fleet off to
arrest the pope and bring him back to Constantinople---but the fleet
was lost in a storm. So the emperor confiscated papal estates in
Calabria and Sicily. One result was that the eastern emperor wasn't
available to help when Lombards threatened Rome, so Greg. appealed to
the Frank Charles Martel for help, setting an interesting precedent
for the future.
Jerome Ranuzzi (blessed) (d. 1455) Jerome was born near Urbino at
the end of the fourteenth century. He became a Servite friar, got a
doctorate in theology at Bologna, and served as a teacher in a
variety of Servite study houses. The duke of Urbino "borrowed" JR
from the order as court theologian and advisor. Eventually, though,
J was able to return to a life of prayerful solitude. Upon his
death, the body was immediately enshrined above an alter inthe church
of the Servites in Sant' Angelo. His ult was confirmed in 1775.
